Shoeless in the Land of the Free

I recently had the pleasure of traveling through an airport in America, and let me tell you, it was an experience like no other - especially compared to the airports I've visited in other countries.

For starters, there was the security check. In China, I've breezed through security without even having to take off my jacket. In Dubai, they have automated lanes with scanners that check your bags while you walk through. And in Nigeria, they just give you a friendly pat-down and send you on your way.

But in America, it's a whole different story. There I was, standing in line, trying to make small talk with the TSA agent (not sure if that’s the correct name) about the weather, when suddenly it was my turn.

"Ma’am,  could you please remove your shoes?" the agent asked.

I must have looked puzzled, because she added, "For security reasons."

Oh, right. Of course. Because what's a little shoe-removing inconvenience when it comes to national security?

So I reluctantly slipped off my shoes and placed them on the conveyor belt, feeling like I was some kind of barefoot criminal. And as I walked through the metal detector, I couldn't help but wonder what other strange customs I might encounter in this strange land.

But the fun didn't stop there. Oh no. After I retrieved my shoes and put them back on, I had to navigate my way through the airport, which was a maze of endless corridors and confusing signs. I must have made at least 2 wrong turns before I finally found my gate.

And then there was the actual flight. I won't bore you with the details, but let's just say that I've had more legroom on a rollercoaster.

In the end, though, it was all worth it. Because as soon as I stepped off that plane, I was met with the warm embrace of my  friend, and that's a feeling that no amount of security checks or cramped seating can take away.

So if you're ever planning a trip to or around America, just remember: bring comfortable shoes, a map, and a sense of humor. Trust me, you'll need it. And maybe pack a few extra pair of socks too, just in case.

Xoxo

Yours in socks only.
