Long time no post!!!
“You are too ambitious for a girl; in fact you shouldn’t be thinking of books all the time. You should think of getting married to a man that would help you”. These were the words shouted at me when I said I intend to go to grad school during my last year of undergrad.
Hi, I’m oluwatoyosi, a proud Nigerian. I believe starting this way will give a peek into what fuels my passion.
When people I held in high esteem look down on my dreams, I’m glad I had my mum and friends; they never stopped telling me how much they believe in me.
I am now a second-year developmental biology master's student at the University of Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, China. Under the genomic and molecular breeding of biofuel research group,
My research focuses on developing transgenic crop plants (sorghum and maize) safe for diabetics and obesity patients.
Nothing brings me joy than the moments I spend working on my research. Well, my advisor is still asking me “any interesting results?” I can proudly refer to myself as a scientist.
One amazing woman once said, “you are not too ambitious for a girl, in fact you are not ambitious enough!”
So my advice to my fellow women in STEM is that you are not ambitious enough, don’t let anyone look down on your dreams.
jiayou!
