Toyosi of Nigeria PART 2
But Why Is Everyone In Nigeria Obsessed With Asking If I’m Married?
Dear readers! If you thought my erroneous airport landing was the peak of my Nigerian tales, then fasten your seatbelt; we're about to navigate the intricate roads of familial funnies and cultural quips.
The second my feet touched Nigerian soil, and before the intoxicating aroma of jollof rice (think of it as a West African delicacy) could draw me in, I was bombarded with that relentless question: "Are you married yet?" A swift 'no' is an open door to the inevitable follow-up: "But why?" It's as though I'm expected to have a rehearsed script handy.
Thinking of a casual market visit? A spirited vendor might enthusiastically chirp, "Ah, this fabric! Perfect for when you have a husband!" I mean, I just wanted some aromatic spices.
Even in church, the sanctity of worship offers no escape. Midst prayers for world peace and prosperity, a special shoutout goes: "May our single sisters and brothers find their rightful halves soon!" I mean, a simple blessing for good grades would suffice or a good job?
That aside, the family gatherings nko? It’s a delightful maze of laughter, dance, delectable bites of pounded yam, amala and more, and, of course, that inevitable nudge. "When will we dance at your big day?" or the evergreen, "You should find someone from our tribe, especially Yoruba, right?"
Now, about that pièce de résistance: One evening, my dear Uncle, in all his wisdom, decided we should catch up over a drink at a bar. As the afrobeats set the mood and we sipped our drinks, he leaned in with, "So, any special man in your life?" Admitting ‘no’ apparently signaled a green light. "You know, in 1-2 years, you should settle down. Preferably with a doctor – they’re successful, and let’s face it, your academic field, though admirable, might not sell."(#iykyk) Uncle, I love you, but matchmaking isn’t your forte.
It's amusing, really. Every nudge, every playful poke, every well-meaning piece of advice; it's Nigeria's unique way of saying, "We care."
Family oh family🥹 despite all, we still love them.
Cheers,
The actively “doctor” husband hunting Oluwatoyosi😂
